Lab Operations Supervisor (Biotech)

Apex Systems is a large staffing and consulting firm and we are looking for a Lab Operations Supervisor with a Life Science background with 5+ years of supply chain management, inventory & asset management, shipping/receiving and coordinating experience to place at our Biopharma client.

Contract/Perm & duration: 12-month contract

Location: Downtown Toronto

We are seeking a Laboratory Operations Supervisor that will provide innovative leadership for all aspects of our clients lab facilities, including aspects of space planning and design, capital planning and management and construction management.
This candidate must excel in fast-paced and complex lab environments leading an enterprise-wide Lab Operations team. This leader engages with all levels within the organization and regularly provides direction and strategy.

 

Responsibilities:

  • In collaboration with facilities, support the long-term planning for laboratories strategy related to but not limited to space planning, capital builds, and lab operations.
  • Partner with current architect and construction teams as subject matter expert and owner representative for laboratory builds.
  • Primary point of contact for scientific leadership and lab-based associates for space management in the labs and office areas.
  • Collaborate with scientists to address any workflow bottlenecks, inefficiencies, or opportunities for process improvements.
  • Supervise and coach a team of lab operations staff to include work delegation, time management and providing applicable training to develop the existing team to ensure high service delivery standards are maintained.
  • Manage all lab equipment, preventative maintenance, and service contracts with applicable vendors.
  • Manage the site’s OPEX and CAPEX budgets as it relates to lab operations and facilities, providing budgetary guidance to Finance.
  • In collaboration with Finance, Procurement, Facilities, and IT, execute the purchase and installation of capital lab equipment.
  • Oversee management of all assets in the CMMS, include inputting new assets, asset locations, PM scheduling, maintenance history and final disposition of assets.
  • Oversee and manage all technical aspects and proper record keeping of laboratory onboarding and training.
  • Lead work on all relevant issues including but not limited to; ensuring laboratory safety standards are followed, licenses are up to date, create and implement high quality standards of good lab practices, help to create, and influence safety policies in collaboration with EH&S personnel.
  • Provide “on-call” support on a rotating basis. Support regular 24-7 operation of laboratory and ensure appropriate response to equipment issues as needed.
  • Partner with Procurement to assist with ordering and tracking of supplies.
    • Develop and maintain vendor relationships in support of the Laboratory.
  • Liaison with Legal to support request for contracts and changes to agreements including but not limited to Confidentiality and Consulting agreements.
  • Work with Research leaders on business continuity plans as needed.
  • Author, revise and approve Standard Operating Procedures in our document control platform, as required.
Key Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in life sciences field with a minimum of 5+ years’ experience working in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience leading/organizing a team.
  • Experience working with and operating laboratory equipment as well as management of laboratory space.
  • Strong background in asset management and information technologies.
  • Knowledge of lab equipment maintenance (ex: freezer, fridges, centrifuges, liquid handlers, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to maintain a high standard of confidentiality.
  • Project management skills are an asset.
  • Strong follow-up and time management skills with ability to effectively multi-task and a willingness to perform a wide range of tasks.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Visio).
  • Proficiency in space layout software (BlueBeam, CAD) is an asset.
  • Familiarity with HVAC, electrical, janitorial, and other facility related duties highly desired.
