Since the time of the ancient Greeks, mentoring has proven to be a powerful educational and developmental experience.  On an individual level, mentoring leads to increased job performance, amplified career mobility, higher salaries, and greater satisfaction in job and career--and these benefits accrue for mentor and mentee alike.  On an organizational level, effective socialization for newcomers, increased employee productivity, deeper organizational commitment, higher retention rates, and greater profitability.  Individuals and organizations looking to maximize the benefits of mentoring can do so by first creating a culture that fosters mentoring and then applying best practices in their mentoring experiences.

Creating a culture of mentoring requires:

  • aligned with their strategy, culture and people. Typically, a mentoring culture will create an environment where people listen to each other, the managers and directors ask questions, give feedback, have powerful conversations and are actively engaged with their team members.
  • create a safe, positive, active learning environment (learning is the priority)
  • establish expectations for both mentor and mentee.
  • set up a system of accountability, whereby both parties are held accountable for completing their tasks and working together to reach goals and solve problems

Best practices in mentoring include:

  • commitment to confidentiality, trust, and mutual respect
  • open communication
  • setting and achieving clear, meaningful goals
  • determine and accept responsibilities
