60 Minutes

You’re pushing hard to make things happen—driving change, seeking improvement—but it feels like leadership is standing in the way. “They’re not helping!” Sound familiar? This common frustration with management, where every step forward seems to hit a new barrier, often sparks the question: How do I manage up?

I've asked that same question—sometimes loudly—and not always productively. In this session, join Tricia Broderick for a candid exploration of what it really means to manage up without making things worse. You’ll walk away with practical tips for improving experiments, communication, and your working relationship with leadership. Whether you're a team lead, coach, or individual contributor, come ready to rethink how you influence and collaborate across the org chart.

Self-Reflection Questions Based on Tricia's Best Practices

1. Expanding Your Lens:

  • When presenting ideas, do I consider how they benefit my boss, team, customers, and stakeholders—not just myself?
  • Am I addressing potential concerns from multiple perspectives before pitching proposals?

2. Taking Ownership:

  • What small experiments within my control could I start today instead of waiting for bigger changes?
  • Am I focusing too much on problems I can't control rather than opportunities I can influence?

3. Practicing Vulnerability:

  • Do I frame my requests as experiments with clear success metrics and review timelines?
  • Am I comfortable acknowledging what I don't know while showing confidence in my ability to learn?
  • Do I give my manager the option to adjust course based on results?

4. Partnering with Leaders:

  • Am I approaching my manager as a partner rather than someone to "manage"?
  • Do I clearly communicate what support I need when proposing ideas?
  • Am I giving my manager grace, recognizing they may not have been trained for their role?
  • How can I help my manager feel invested in my experiments rather than sidelined?
