Job Description:
Senior Software Engineer
Contract | 7 months | 40 hours/week | No OT/Weekends
Overview
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join a high-impact engineering team supporting a mission-critical real-time log analysis / log intelligence platform. This system operates at extreme scale (~20TB/min, ingesting from ~9,000 sources) and requires exceptional attention to stability, correctness, and performance. The engineer will work closely with the team lead to safely enhance a ~20-year legacy codebase while also supporting design and implementation of new streaming capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Enhance and maintain a high-throughput, low-latency real-time analytics platform with strict SLAs.
- Dive into and improve a mature legacy codebase (limited documentation / high complexity), implementing safe changes with strong risk awareness.
- Contribute to new streaming design and implementation while maintaining existing frameworks.
- Build and support event-driven services (or actor-based patterns where applicable) with operational excellence.
- Participate in a team culture focused on curiosity, bias for action, and deep attention to detail.
Required Qualifications
- Prior internal Amazon experience (required)
- Senior-level engineering experience in production environments with meaningful operational impact
- Strong backend engineering skills in Java (Spring or similar)
- Strong working knowledge of Linux (comfort troubleshooting, logs, runtime behavior, basic systems fundamentals)
- Experience building/supporting distributed systems and/or event-driven architectures
- Ability to work hybrid onsite in Nashville, TN for the duration of the engagement
- Strong attention to detail, safe-change mindset, and ability to ramp quickly in ambiguous/legacy environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with high-throughput + low-latency systems and strict SLAs
- AWS experience (ECS, EC2, DynamoDB, Lambda, SQS, CloudWatch, etc.)
- Infrastructure as Code experience (e.g., AWS CDK)
- Streaming/pipeline design experience (e.g., Kinesis/Kafka/Flink/Spark Streaming)
- Experience supporting experimentation / A/B testing frameworks
Interview Process
- 1-hour technical interview (code + scenario-based)
