Job Description:
Position Summary
The Field Chemist is responsible for supporting onsite waste management activities, including the identification, segregation, and packaging of hazardous and non-hazardous materials. This role involves working at customer locations to ensure materials are handled safely, in compliance with applicable regulations, and prepared appropriately for transport and disposal.
- Follow established safety protocols at all times, promoting a strong culture of health and environmental compliance
- Sort, classify, and package chemical materials based on hazard category, ensuring compatibility and proper containment
- Prepare and complete required documentation for waste handling, transportation, and disposal activities
- Organize and load necessary tools, supplies, and equipment for field projects
- Travel to client sites including industrial facilities, laboratories, and academic institutions to perform lab pack and waste services
- Assist with field identification and characterization of unknown or unprofiled materials
- Ensure proper labeling, placarding, and load separation in accordance with hazardous materials transportation guidelines
- Communicate effectively with client site personnel to support successful project execution and maintain positive working relationships
- Provide direction to supporting field staff, including technicians and drivers, during job activities
- Build foundational knowledge of high-risk materials handling, including compressed gas cylinders and reactive chemicals
- Support assignments at various locations as business needs require
- Contribute to additional tasks or projects as assigned by leadership
- Associate degree in Chemistry, Environmental Science, or a related field required; Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Equivalent experience (2+ years) in environmental services, lab packing, or hazardous waste handling may be considered in place of a degree
- Valid driver’s license required; ability to obtain a Class B CDL with Hazmat endorsement within 6 months of hire
- Must meet company motor vehicle driving standards
- Willingness to comply with respiratory protection requirements, including maintaining a clean-shaven appearance when necessary
- Ability to remain alert and prioritize safety in fast-paced or potentially hazardous environments
- Working knowledge (or ability to learn) federal, state, and local environmental regulations (e.g., EPA, DOT standards)
- Strong communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with both internal teams and external clients
- Dependable attendance and ability to meet job scheduling expectations
