Critical Environment Data Center Operator Tech (Electrical 3) - Night shift

Apex Systems is a global IT services provider, and our staffing practice has an opening for a Critical Environment Data Center Operator Tech (Electrical 3) – Night shift to support our client, a multinational technology corporation.

Client: Multinational technology corporation

Terms: 612-month contract, with expectation to convert to permanent fulltime.

Overview:

        This is an operations engineering role intended to assist and supplement the existing operational engineers and management team.

        Demonstrate a proactive commitment to learning, growth, and skill development.

        Promote a culture of safety, security, and compliance across all data‑center operations.

        Collaborate with design, construction, and commissioning teams to test and validate the installation, operation, and performance of electrical systems.

        Understand the design, functionality, and operational requirements of the data centers.

        Support 24x7x365 on-site data‑center operations and electrical infrastructure.

        Serve as a technical authority for on-site operations related to large-scale, mission-critical electrical systems, including system design and functionality.

        Lead the development and implementation of operational procedures to maintain highly redundant electrical operations.

        Manage electrical infrastructure across the data‑center campus, from large‑capacity facilities to multiple smaller sites.

Responsibilities:

·        Review and approve MSOW documentation for third-party contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and service providers.

·        Analyze and monitor the performance of electrical, mechanical, and fire/life safety systems.

·        Lead emergency monitoring and response using established emergency operating procedures (EOPs).

·        Author, review, and approve operational procedures (SOPs, MOPs, EOPs) for planned and corrective work.

·        Provide after-hours and on-call engineering escalation support, including on-site response when issues cannot be resolved remotely; escalation responsibilities are 24/7/365 as coordinated with operations management.

·        Adhere to all safety and physical security procedures while performing work.

·        Record daily operational readings for electrical equipment through routine rounds and log taking (temperatures, voltages, currents, etc.).

·        Oversee and execute operational procedures, including:

o  Cabinet energization in colocation environments

o  Quarterly and annual UPS preventive maintenance

o  System control panel preventive maintenance

o  Battery preventive maintenance

o  Switchgear, transformer, and service board maintenance

o  RPP shutdown of one source (critical load remains on “N”)

o  PDU shutdown for power meter replacement

o  Power Interruption Testing (PIT)

o  Master controller shutdown or replacement

·        Apply expert knowledge of the Provincial Electrical Code and lockout/tagout standards.

·        Demonstrate experience applying CSA Z462 in operational safety management.

·        Review and interpret protective coordination and incident energy studies.

·        Oversee maintenance and operation of fire alarm and life safety systems.

·        Lead troubleshooting, repair, and replacement of instrument sensors and calibration activities.

·        Utilize building and power management systems (BAS, EPMS).

Experience qualifications:

Required

        Multiyear experience in datacenter, telecommunications, powerplant, utilityscale production, or resourceextraction operations.

        Experience with electrical systems in highavailability or criticalinfrastructure environments such as data centers, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical, or manufacturing facilities.

        Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering from an accredited university.

        5+ years of postgraduation work experience in technical fields (e.g., automotive, electrical, controls, data center).

        Ability to work day shifts, M-F 8-5 pm for training, for a few months; then...

o  Working night shifts (7 pm - 7 am, permanently) on either front/back side, as assigned, on night shift.

        Ability to work flexible schedules, including 12hour shifts, rotating shifts, and varied weekly schedules. Must provide 24/7/365 escalation support as coordinated by operations management and be able to report onsite during oncall incidents.

        Basic proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Excel, Word, SharePoint, PowerPoint).

 

Preferred

 

        Experience as an engineer in facility operations or fieldservice engineering, in addition to design, construction, commissioning, or projectmanagement experience.

        Master’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering from an accredited university.
