OpenShift Platform Engineer (Systems)

Location: Radford, Virginia (Remote)

 

Role Overview

This position is for a Platform Engineer supporting a program operating a containerized, Kubernetes-based, multitenant hosting environment. This environment is used for enterprise and distributed applications across multiple global locations. The Platform Engineer will be instrumental in designing, building, operating, and securing the Kubernetes platform that supports mission-critical workloads.

 

Key Responsibilities
  • Work with engineering teams to design, develop, and maintain a Kubernetes-based enterprise hosting architecture.
  • Develop, deploy, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to support provisioning, configuration, and lifecycle management of Kubernetes clusters and platform services.
  • Provide daily administration of Kubernetes clusters, including patching, upgrades, and maintenance of all core components.
  • Configure and manage Container Network Interface (CNI) plugins such as Calico, Cilium, or OpenShift SDN.
  • Deploy and maintain Container Storage Interface (CSI) drivers to support dynamic provisioning of persistent storage.
  • Monitor consumption of compute, storage, and networking resources and notify leadership when additional capacity is required.
  • Harden Kubernetes clusters and associated components in accordance with best practices and required cybersecurity controls.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve platform issues related to Kubernetes networking, container workloads, persistent storage, and runtime environments.
  • Develop and maintain operational documentation, including architectures, diagrams, and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide on-call production support for after-hours incidents and escalation.
Required Qualifications


Clearance: Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret clearance as a condition or continuation of employment.


Education: A Bachelor’s degree or higher in an IT-related field is required.

 

Experience: Senior-level hands-on experience with Kubernetes-based platforms such as Red Hat OpenShift, Rancher, or upstream Kubernetes is required. Experience deploying and managing CSI drivers for dynamic persistent storage provisioning is also necessary.

 

Technical Skills: The role requires strong IaC experience using Helm, Kustomize, Terraform, and GitOps tools like Argo CD or Flux. Candidates must have strong troubleshooting skills across Kubernetes networking, container runtimes, persistent storage, and platform services. Familiarity with Kubernetes persistent storage ecosystems and observability tools is required.

 

Certifications: A Security+ or equivalent Level II certification is required. A relevant Computing Environment certification such as Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or Red Hat Certified Specialist in OpenShift Administration must be obtained within 6 months of hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications
  • Strong understanding of Kubernetes networking concepts including CNIs, service discovery, ingress controllers, and network policies.
  • Proven experience building and administering enterprise-grade Kubernetes clusters.
  • Experience with container orchestration technologies such as Docker, Podman, or Kubernetes.
  • Experience managing container registries like Harbor or Quay.
  • Automation proficiency using Ansible, Terraform, Python, or similar tools.
  • Working knowledge of industry-standard hardening practices.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps processes and integrating Kubernetes workloads into CI/CD pipelines.

Compensation & Benefits

The anticipated pay range for this position is $65.00/hr to $80.00/hr. Please note that the final pay rate will be determined based on a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, qualifications, and the specific requirements of the role.
