Software Development Engineer I — Scientific & AI Applications
Overview

At Microsoft, we are building platforms and tools that empower scientists, researchers, and data science practitioners to solve some of the world’s most complex problems. As a Software Development Engineer I (SDE I) on our team, you will contribute to developing software solutions that enable scientific computing, machine learning workflows, and simulation-based applications.

This role is ideal for engineers early in their careers who are passionate about applying software engineering to scientific and AI-driven problem spaces, and who are excited to work with cutting-edge technologies such as AI agents and large language models (LLMs).

Responsibilities
Core Engineering
  • Design, develop, test, and maintain software for scientific and data science–focused applications.
  • Write and own production-quality code for customer-facing GitHub repositories.
  • Contribute reusable code assets, tools, and automation frameworks to support broader developer and research communities.
Customer & Collaboration
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to onboard and support data science customers.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to unblock issues and improve developer workflows.
  • Ensure high-quality customer experiences by resolving technical challenges efficiently.
AI / Data Science Enablement
  • Apply software engineering practices to machine learning workflows and data science problems.
  • Contribute to AI/LLM-enabled solutions, including the development of agentic workflows and automation tools.
  • Support integration of APIs and emerging AI technologies into scientific computing pipelines.
Scientific Computing & Simulation
  • Build and support solutions involving computational science, simulation, or modeling workflows.
  • Apply programming techniques to real-world scientific problems and research scenarios.
Open Source & Community
  • Maintain and manage GitHub repositories, including issue triage, code updates, and documentation.
  • Publish reusable assets and best practices to foster community adoption and engagement.
Typical Day in the Role
  • Writing, testing, and deploying code for scientific or AI-enabled applications
  • Publishing reusable code and tools to GitHub repositories
  • Collaborating with teammates to unblock customer issues
  • Enhancing AI/LLM-based workflows and developer tooling
  • Supporting data scientists by improving software systems and pipelines
Required Qualifications
  • 1–2 years of experience in software development or engineering
  • Experience using GitHub or similar version control systems
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts, including LLMs, APIs, or model integration
  • Experience applying software engineering practices in scientific, data science, or simulation-based contexts
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in scientific computing, computational science, or simulation workflows
  • Knowledge of agentic AI systems or AI-driven automation
  • Exposure to machine learning pipelines or data science tooling
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in technical, research-oriented environments
Education
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field or equivalent practical experience
Skills
  • Strong programming and software engineering fundamentals
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., GitHub)
  • Basic understanding of AI, large language models, and agent-based systems
  • Problem-solving and debugging skills
  • Effective verbal and written communication
Candidate Expectations
  • Share a GitHub portfolio demonstrating relevant projects
  • Be prepared to discuss applications of software development in:
    • Scientific computing
    • Machine learning or AI workflows
    • Simulation or research-driven use cases

Work Environment
  • Remote-first role
