Edge computing refers to computations being made on data at the point of data collection: at that location and at that time. This is especially relevant to artificial intelligence (AI), automation, and robotics applications, but it doesn't stop there. Insights discovery at the edge is also essential in immersive reality applications (Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality, and the Metaverse). Insights from data collected at the edge therefore fuels innovation and smart devices everywhere, through applications of machine learning and data science. Edge intelligence is a very hot topic that ties into many other technologies: IoT (Internet of Things), Digital Twins, Autonomous Systems, Drones, 4-D Printing, Digital Supply Chain, Digital Manufacturing, Design, Cybersecurity, and more. We will touch on several of these, particularly from their relevance as applications of insights-driven data science, machine learning, and AI at the edge.
