A Fortune 20 oil and gas company uses Agile SAFe methodology for a digital transformation.

SITUATION

Our client, a Fortune 20 Oil and Gas supermajor, embarked on a large digital transformation to accelerate value in their business. This included designing a new operating model for IT solutions and services to be delivered through multiple digital platforms. Product lines were built around business capabilities with a goal to remove barriers that inhibit value and break down functional silos to enable enterprise-wide cross-functional ways of working. Our client wished to use a team-of-teams approach to work in close partnership with the business using Agile SAFe methodology.

Implemented SAFe Agile Framework

SOLUTION

The client Enterprise PMO leveraged our Project Management as a Service solution to enable an agile way of working and help instill an organizational agile mindset, as well as to encourage strong agile practices across the organization. Our solution delivered project execution capability around key agile roles including Scrum Masters, Business Analysts, Release Train Engineers, as well as traditional Project Management and Organizational Change Managers. Our Managed Service included over 30 Agile team members, assigned to various product lines and agile release trains across the organization.

Apex delivered a robust pre-engagement “boot camp” orientation training. During orientation we reviewed the playbook of existing agile toolsets and methodologies to familiarize team with agile operating model, client culture, stakeholder review, and overview of unique client environment, which produced increased speed-to-value in mobilizing agile project teams. Additional Apex investments included: customized SAFe certification for project team members, performance reviews, and the creation and facilitation of Agile Community of Practices.

RESULT

Our solution delivered a cross-functional workforce aligned to business capabilities that satisfied skill set demands and ensured consistent delivery across the organization. The managed service allowed the customer to ramp up projects quickly and reduced client involvement in project delivery. Finally, we provided the customer the ability to scale the workforce up and down based on project demand and promote velocity and adaptability as the organization shifted from a project to a product delivery model.
